Custom illustrations and branded infographics for Save the Children Netherlands’ Sudan migration report, supporting clear and impactful communication within their brand system.

Overview

Save the Children Netherlands commissioned a series of custom illustrations and branded infographics for their report Traversing Danger: Cumulative Risks and Physiological Harm for Children in Migration (2025). The report highlights the severe risks faced by children fleeing Sudan and aims to raise awareness and inform policy discussions through research-backed insights.

My role was to develop a set of illustrations visualizing the five primary risks children face during migration, along with branded infographics highlighting key figures and findings. These visual elements were designed to support the narrative of the report by making complex and sensitive information more accessible, impactful, and engaging.

Role

Freelance Brand Designer & Illustrator
Commissioned by Save the Children Netherlands

Scope included:

  • Illustration development aligned with brand identity

  • Visual interpretation of sensitive humanitarian themes

  • Creation of branded infographics highlighting key statistics and insights

  • Ensuring visual consistency with Save the Children’s brand system

The Challenge

The primary challenge was to develop an illustration approach that remained fully aligned with Save the Children’s brand while addressing highly sensitive subject matter. Existing illustration guidelines did not provide sufficient direction for this specific context, requiring a deeper interpretation of the brand’s visual foundations.

It was essential to create visuals that clearly communicated the severity of the risks children face, while preserving their dignity, agency, and humanity. The illustrations needed to balance emotional impact with clarity and responsibility, supporting the report’s message without sensationalising or misrepresenting the subject matter.

Additionally, the visuals needed to complement a text-heavy report by creating moments of visual clarity, helping readers absorb key messages and critical data more effectively.

The Solution

I developed a series of illustrations and infographics rooted in Save the Children’s brand principles, ensuring consistency with their visual identity while adapting the style to suit the report’s specific narrative needs.

This involved interpreting the brand’s core visual language and translating it into illustrations that were empathetic, respectful, and clear. Each illustration was carefully designed to communicate complex risks and experiences in a way that was both impactful and aligned with the organisation’s values.

The infographics were structured to highlight key statistics and insights, improving readability and strengthening the report’s ability to communicate urgent findings to policymakers, stakeholders, and the public.
